Access Control

In the fields of both physical protection and data security, access control (AC) is the selective restriction of access to some location or alternative source. Locks and login credentials are just two corresponding mechanisms of access management.

There are two main types of access control: physical and logical. Physical access control limits access to campuses, buildings, rooms and physical IT assets. Logical access limits connections to computer networks, system files, and data.
